Varsi: AI-assisted course builder

Varsi is a compliance and onboarding platform where administrators create training courses. Previously, creating a course was entirely manual: admins had to read long PDFs, extract key themes, format text into modules, and write quiz questions from scratch. I designed the end-to-end AI-assisted workflow that transforms raw PDF documents into structured, modular lessons and quizzes automatically.

The course creation process was strictly manual, bottlenecking customer onboarding. Admins spent hours copying and pasting text from corporate compliance docs into the LMS creator. This heavy cognitive load meant longer setup times, lower platform engagement, and delayed employee compliance training.

AI automation saves time, but introduces user anxiety. My primary design challenges were:

• The “Black Box” Problem: Users feel anxious when they click “generate” and see a static loading screen without knowing what the AI is doing.
• Lack of Trust: AI outputs can hallucinate. Users needed an airtight way to verify, edit, and correct the generated lessons without context-switching.

Decision 1: Designing for “Active Waiting”

Instead of a generic spinning wheel during the AI processing phase, I designed a multi-stage status indicator (e.g., Reading Document → Structuring Modules → Drafting Quizzes).

Impact: This transparent feedback loop reduced perceived wait times and set expectations for the output structure.

Decision 2: The “Review & Refine” Split Workspace

AI rarely gets it 100% right on the first try. I rejected a standard linear wizard in favour of a split-screen editor.

• Right Panel: The AI assistant panel, showing the source document, processing steps, and generated output.
• Left Panel: The editable, interactive blocks generated by the AI (text, quizzes, flip-cards).

Impact: Users could fact-check and tweak the AI's work instantly without switching tabs or losing their place.

• Friction: Cut down user drop-off during the initial company onboarding phase.
• Adoption: Enabled teams to scale their internal training libraries instantly, directly driving Varsi's platform stickiness.
