Paystack Direct Debit

Lead Product Designer
I led the user experience design for Paystack's Direct Debit feature, a payment method that empowers businesses to pull recurring funds directly from a customer's bank account. This project required transforming a highly regulated, high-friction, asynchronous technical process into a seamless, high-trust experience for both merchants and end-consumers.
Direct Debit is a brilliant alternative to cards, but it suffers from severe user friction. Mandates require high security clearance, involve multi-party bank systems, and take over 24 hours to activate. The UX challenge was twofold: building absolute user trust during account linking, and managing delayed transaction states without causing merchant confusion.
1. The high-trust onboarding flow (consumer-facing)
Standard bank authorisations look intimidating. I redesigned the mandate setup into a guided, step-by-step flow with clear microcopy. I turned the required identity validation (OTP or micro-transfer) into a reassuring security landmark rather than a point of friction.
2. Managing asynchronous states (the 24-hour wait)
Because mandates take up to 24 hours to activate, users often think the system failed. I introduced clear visual timeline components, real-time status trackers, and automated communication touchpoints to keep users securely in the loop.
3. Merchant & customer management surfaces
Redesigned the Paystack dashboard to include a dedicated space for merchants to manage active mandates, queue recurring charges, and handle retries or revocations. Customers were also given a platform to track and manage their active authorisations.
- Anxiety-Free Microcopy: Reassured users by explicitly stating exactly how much control they retain, how to cancel a mandate, and ensuring the validation fee is fully refundable.
- Progressive Disclosure: Masked complex banking regulations behind clean, bite-sized inputs, revealing details only when required by the bank infrastructure.
- Error Resilience: Designed predictive error handling that identifies common user mistakes (like trying to charge a mandate before the required 6-hour post-authorisation window) and stops them before they happen.
- Transaction Growth: Direct Debit transactions grew from NGN 12.1M to over NGN 1B monthly within the first year of launch.
- Lowered Abandonment: Streamlined account-linking interactions directly minimised user drop-offs during identity verification.
- Reduced Support Overhead: Clearer status states on the merchant dashboard drastically cut down customer service inquiries regarding delayed mandates.
- Alternative Payment Adoption: Made bank-to-bank recurring billing accessible to a wider demographic of users who do not rely on traditional debit cards.
