Overview
SMEs and internet creators across Africa needed a faster way to accept payments without the overhead of building massive, expensive websites. The existing toolsets were fragmented. I was part of a cross-functional effort to design a suite of tools that let merchants create products and start accepting payments in minutes, no code required. From payment pages and storefronts to order management, digital products and discount codes, the experience was designed to collapse complexity into a single, cohesive flow that scales with the merchant.
Core workstreams & UX strategy
- Storefronts & Product Links: Designed the end-to-end storefront builder, letting merchants go from zero to a live online store with product listings, categories, and a branded checkout in minutes.
- Digital Products: Engineered a secure, friction-free download loop. Buyers receive their files instantly after checkout, pairing high system visibility with an automated backup delivery email.
- Subscriptions: Led the redesign of Paystack's subscriptions product, rebuilding the end-to-end experience while the existing system remained live to deliver Subscriptions 2.0 across dashboard and checkout.
- Discount Codes: Created a persistent, smart validation field within the checkout viewport. This mechanism verifies and recalculates cart totals dynamically without triggering hard page reloads, maximising conversion velocity.
Key design decisions
- Defensive Error Handling: Built highly descriptive, inline microcopy across forms to prevent friction before users could make formatting mistakes.
- Unified Component Architecture: Scaled custom atomic UX components symmetrically so that an identical design logic governed standalone links and large storefront layouts alike.
